LEARNING SKILLS TEACHER, Full-Time 

Position Overview. Christchurch School seeks a full-time Learning Skills Teacher. Our Learning Skills Program is designed for students with a wide range of learning backgrounds looking for success in a main-stream, college-prep academic program. Students in the Learning Skills Program typically have been diagnosed with mild to moderate learning differences. The goal of the program is to help neurodiverse students understand their learning profile, learn and employ strategies to help them be successful in a main-stream, college-prep academic environment, and grow in their confidence in many areas of their lives and most especially in their academic life.  A successful teacher in the department will be able to: develop deep relationships with students that fosters trust; facilitate engaging lessons that helps students learn effective academic skills and habits; provide direct support on classwork and help students incorporate those academic skills in their core academic subjects.
 
Christchurch School fosters a student-centered approach to pedagogical practices, valuing the craft of teaching and embracing the boarding school model for meaningful education of the whole child. Equally, employees at CCS are expected to foster an inclusive workplace and contribute to a community built on equitable policies and procedures.  Teachers at CCS also contribute to the school by leading an advisory of 7-10 students, being a part of a duty team one evening per week and 6-7 weekends per year, and participating in two seasons of co-curriculars.
 
Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Passionate about education as a profession and excited to learn or hone the craft of teaching
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A deep wellspring of patience and compassion for neurodiverse students
  • Candidates should be realistic and excited about teaching in a boarding school and in working with students with a wide range of academic abilities 
 
Preferred
  • 2-4 years teaching experience, preferably in a boarding or independent school
  • Experience working with neurodiverse students
  • A background in math and interest in supporting students who might struggle in math would be particularly useful
  • Experience, or desire to learn about, students with dyslexia, dyscalculia
  • Familiar with, or desire to learn about, strategies to help with reading, writing, and math fluency
  • This position is also expected to participate in the school’s co-curricular program.  Experience with football or sailing would be a particular area of need but not necessary to apply.
 
Work environment and physical demands:
  • Ability to be mobile around campus and buildings
  • Ability to work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods
  • Some travel required (mainly for athletic competitions)
