Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. The school’s Mission is to inspire and guide each student's pursuit of personal excellence in academics and character so they are prepared for meaningful lives as engaged citizens and community leaders.
Position Overview. Christchurch School seeks a full-time Learning Skills Teacher. Our Learning Skills Program is designed for students with a wide range of learning backgrounds looking for success in a main-stream, college-prep academic program. Students in the Learning Skills Program typically have been diagnosed with mild to moderate learning differences. The goal of the program is to teach neurodiverse students how to understand their academic strengths and weaknesses, develop a growth mindset, learn and employ strategies to help them be successful in a main-stream, college-prep environment, and grow in their confidence to thrive in their academic life, and build an awareness of how strategies to help with executive functioning can also foster success in many other areas of their lives. A successful teacher in the department will be able to: develop deep relationships with students that fosters trust; facilitate engaging lessons that help students learn effective academic skills and habits; provide direct support on classwork and help students incorporate those academic skills in their core academic subjects.
Christchurch School fosters a student-centered approach to pedagogical practices, valuing the craft of teaching and embracing the boarding school model for meaningful education of the whole child. Teachers at CCS also contribute to the school by leading an advisory of 7-10 students, being a part of a duty team one evening per week and 6-7 weekends per year, and participating in two seasons of co-curriculars (particular areas of need are men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, sailing, and football).
Qualifications
- Qualified candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree
- Passionate about education as a profession and excited to learn or hone the craft of teaching
- Experience working with neurodiverse students in the college-prep learning environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- A wellspring of patience and compassion for neurodiverse students
- Candidates should be realistic and excited about teaching in a boarding school and in working with students with a wide range of academic abilities
Preferred
- 1-3 years teaching experience, preferably in a boarding or independent school
- Has experience co-teaching and/or enjoys working on an educational team
- A background in math and interest in supporting students who might struggle in math would be particularly useful
- Familiar with, or desire to learn about, strategies to help with executive functioning and general learning strategies
- Familiar with, or desire to learn about, strategies to help with reading, writing, and math fluency
Work environment and physical demands:
- Ability to be mobile around campus and buildings
- Ability to work with a team of teachers and students outside of the classroom on multi-day field experiences
- Ability to work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods
- Some travel required (mainly for athletic competitions)
