Full Time Math Department Chair
Academic Year 2025-2026
Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. The school’s Mission is to inspire and guide each student's pursuit of personal excellence in academics and character so they are prepared for meaningful lives as engaged citizens and community leaders.
Position Overview. Christchurch School seeks the next dedicated individual to lead our mathematics department. This is an opportunity for an accomplished educator to lead a department engaged in implementing a constructivist quantitative reasoning curriculum within the broader context of a school that prioritizes relationships, agency, competencies, and the use of place (local, national, and international) to help guide students towards becoming compassionate, engaged, and successful global citizens. This is a unique opportunity for someone who wants to do more than just organize a math department but lead colleagues in how best to think about math instruction and curriculum in the 21st century. We are also growing our computer science program this coming school year which brings an exciting opportunity to collaborate and strengthen STEAM education at CCS.
Christchurch School fosters a student-centered approach to pedagogical practices, valuing the craft of teaching and embracing the boarding school model for meaningful education of the whole child. Equally, employees at CCS are expected to foster an inclusive workplace and contribute to a community built on equitable policies and procedures. Teachers at CCS also contribute to the school by leading an advisory of 7-10 students, being a part of a duty team one evening per week and 6-7 weekends per year, and participating in two seasons of co-curriculars (particular areas of need are men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, sailing, and football).
Studies have shown that women, people of color, and those just beginning in education are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background or who is excited about gaining the experience described in the listing. We believe deeply in a boarding school model of education and are interested in people who find the idea of teaching young people in all capacities of their lives compelling. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of our qualifications as described.
