June 18, 1924 - Oct. 25, 2006

Christchurch School’s legendary former Headmaster, Robert Murrah Yarbrough, died on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at Baptist Hospital in Miami. He had been hospitalized there for about two weeks, fighting cancer. Family and former colleagues were with him.

Bob Yarbrough joined the Christchurch School English faculty in 1952, and was Headmaster from 1957 until 1971. He was the school's longest-serving headmaster, and was an iconic figure to a generation of students. Mr. Yarbrough was a natural teacher, demanding and precise, and conveyed his great love of the English language to his students. As Headmaster, he continued to teach a senior level vocabulary course. He assigned each student a Word-of-the-Day, which the student presented in morning assembly. Many of Yarbrough’s students recall their assigned words decades later, and credit him with their skills in communication. The tradition continues to this day.
